Police Ethics
Individual
agencies as well as the entire profession can be devastated by officer misconduct
or unethical behavior. Even unfounded allegations of unethical behavior can
permanently damage agencies and individual officers. Learning to define,
recognize, and avoid ethical problems can help an agency avoid risk,
unnecessary litigation, and maintain the community’s trust and respect. This four hour course examines ethical issues, questions, and problems related to recruiting, management, and discipline of personnel. Attendees will define ethics and discuss generational differences that can impact perceptions and situational responses. Participants will explore case studies and learn effective decision-making response techniques. The topics will be presented to support understanding of the four cardinal virtues and learning to apply them consistently across the agency. Major topics covered
during this course include:
- Attitude
Influencers
- Generational Differences
- Setting a Positive Example
- Four Cardinal Virtues
- Goal Setting
Police Profiling
Profiling can be defined as “any police practice in which a person
is treated as a suspect because of his or her race, ethnicity, nationality or
religion.” For law enforcement, this commonly refers to stopping and inspecting
individuals passing through public places, including highways, airports, rural
and urban areas. This four hour course will identify key areas of police profiling and focus on perceptions of officer actions. Officers will define discriminatory profiling, examine behavior and explore characteristics of traffic stops and investigations. These topics will be further examined in small group exercises that focus on examples within the community and within departments. During the exercises, students will develop an action plan to address enforcement of laws while maintaining a positive public image. Major topics covered during this course include:
- Profiling: Perceptions and Realities
- Characteristics of Traffic Stops/Investigations
- Taking Ownership
- Establishing Rapport
- Roles of the Agency and the Media
- Profiling Analysis
