Why did you choose the AODA Counseling Program?
After becoming a displaced worker from the New Page Kimberly mill, I knew I needed to go back to school. I had the opportunity to serve the community for over 30 years through the Grand Chute Fire Department and Mission Home, and the AODA program would allow me to continue serving people in our community.
What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
The way a counselor cares about their clients, their profession and educating students to become counselors. They are very passionate about what they do. And even though they are strapped for time, they are always willing to make time to help others and pass on their knowledge. The AODA counselor really cares about people in our community.
Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
I looked at different programs throughout the technical college system in the state; I learned that Fox Valley Tech’s AODA program was so well set up to continue to work towards a bachelor’s degree. After meeting with the program advisor and seeing his passion for his profession, the school, the program, and his students, the decision was easy. He cared so much about what was going on with me and my family. This made me realize that was the career that I wanted to do!
What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
I hope area school districts will see the need for having an AODA counselor in the school district. This would give me the opportunity to work with students, and also educate parents about substance abuse in our community. If our children are the future, we owe it to them to be able to overcome these problems and become successful adults. We need to make those tools available to them at the middle school and high school levels.
