Why did you choose the Culinary Arts program?
My previous job allowed me the freedom to work from home. I always had the Food Network on in the background, and used my family and friends as “guinea pigs” for all of the new creations I found. Food has always been an artistic medium for me; getting to play with my food as a career seemed like a natural choice.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
There are so many different aspects of the culinary industry and so many career paths to learn about and explore that you could never be bored. I find it very interesting that with the same degree you could potentially become an executive chef, executive pastry chef, research and development chef, restaurateur, caterer, culinary instructor or even a professional culinary competitor.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
I would have never thought that the Fox Valley area would have such an amazing culinary program. We rank in the top 10% in the country for culinary schools; I originally thought I would have to attend in Chicago or New York to get any sort of quality education. But FVTC is close, affordable, and has a multitude of options to explore.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
After I graduate I would like to get some more experience in the world of catering and explore the world of entrepreneurship by opening my own catering company. 

As a side note, Sunday, May 12, 2013 was FVTC’s spring commencement ceremony, and I was asked to be the student speaker. It was such an honor to be asked to address the graduating class! I hope that the story of my journey will inspire others who are going through difficult times to never give up on their dreams.
