Administrative Professional

Dec 23, 2013

Career Program: Administrative Professional

Age: 21

Hometown: Appleton, WI

Current Residence: Appleton, WI
Attended FVTC: 2011 through 2014

Why did you choose the Administrative Professional program?
I always had a passion for organizing everything from papers to pens to paper clips. In school, I was eager to type research papers on Microsoft Word or make a PowerPoint presentation for a project. Every time my mother took me school supply shopping, my eyes lit up walking into Office Depot with its endless amounts of office supplies. I couldn’t wait to get home and start organizing my supplies for school. It always fascinated me as a young girl to watch a receptionist answer the phone while filing paperwork at the same time. I would go home and pretend I was working in the office just like I had seen. I knew what I wanted to be and Fox Valley Technical College had the perfect program for me: the Administrative Professional program.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
Every aspect of the Administrative Professional program has its unique feature that makes this degree rewarding. I have learned how to prepare for jobs by revising my cover letter and resume as well as through mock interviews conducted by Student Employment Services. I experienced high pressure situations in the office through different scenarios which tested my skills and my ability to handle those situations. As a result, I discovered more about myself and my abilities, which increased my confidence. Various homework assignments, such as handing out business cards, presenting presentations, and using social networking sites in a professional manner, also added to my personal development.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
I have always believed that I had to be ahead of the game in every area, and college was no exception. I was a sophomore at Appleton West High School when I started to look at colleges. I was looking for a college that was more hands-on and fit my personality. I kept telling myself I have to wait until senior year, but I was too eager to find out about the Tech. My Junior year I finally went to Fox Valley Technical College and asked for a tour of the business division. I knew right then, Fox Valley Technical College was the place for me!

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
My goal after I graduate from Fox Valley Technical College is to find a job as an Administrative Professional in a school. I currently work in the Student Life Center at Fox Valley Technical College and would love to continue my career in a similar environment. I love the atmosphere of being a part of the college and my primary goal is to make the students, faculty and community feel welcomed and happy when they come into Student Life. I have learned a lot of administrative job duties that will benefit me in my future work as an Administrative Professional, hopefully in a similar setting.
