Laboratory Science Technician

Jul 21, 2014

Career Program: Laboratory Science Technician
Age: 48
Hometown: Waupaca
Current Residence: Waupaca
Attended FVTC: Spring 2014 through Spring 2017

Why did you choose the Laboratory Science program?
I chose the Laboratory Science program at FVTC because it is indirectly related to my current profession. Although I am not directly involved with the testing process of what I produce at my workplace, I wanted to gain the knowledge and understanding of what goes on once a sample leaves my area for testing. I also want a better understanding of the math and chemistry that is involved with the laboratory sciences. I knew FVTC was the right fit for that.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
I’m learning that there are so many opportunities out in the workforce for someone with a laboratory science degree. It is a very interesting field to pursue for someone interested in the sciences and mathematics.

I can now sit down and focus on problem solving. In the past I would just hurry through a problem and say, “good enough.” With the sciences and mathematics, problems need to be done a certain way or else your results may be wrong or inaccurate.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
I chose FVTC because I was looking to gain a better understanding of the Lab Sciences and FVTC has the perfect degree for that. The class schedule fits easily into my schedule because I am able to take classes in Appleton or Waupaca, which is my hometown.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
I have been with Appvion for 24 years now, so after graduation I would hope to better my chance at a promotion within the company.
