Business Management, Entrepreneurship Emphasis

Mar 13, 2014

Age: 47
Hometown: Waupaca
Current Residence: Waupaca
Attended FVTC: August 2012 through December 2014

Why did you choose the Business Management/Entrepreneurship Emphasis program?
I would like to build and run a roller rink in the Waupaca area. It will be place where youth and families can go to enjoy quality time together with the added bonus of exercise.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
I have taken something away from every class so far. I’ve covered business basics to business law, accounting and financials, as well as marketing and research. I’ve had a strong desire to start this venture for many years and now I’m confident I’ll have the knowledge to bring it to fruition. There are some areas I will leave to professionals, such as accounting, but I am learning how to read the necessary spreadsheets to track and predict patterns.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
My husband encouraged me to return to school when my previous employer closed their doors. Because I am a dislocated worker, I was given the option of a two-year degree. FVTC is the closest two-year college and I’ve been lucky enough to take some of my general education courses at the Waupaca campus.

How did Fox Valley Technical College change your life?
I never wanted to return to school. I ‘did my time’ in high school and never wanted to step foot in the classroom again. That has all changed. My high school GPA of 1.85 (mostly choir and gym) has evolved into a 3.88 here.
FVTC is a massive melting pot. I don’t think anyone would feel out of place here. I have been amazed by the accepting nature of students from age 17 to 65 and from every possible background and country. It is an incredible learning environment with teachers from all lines of work bringing unique perspectives to the classroom.
FVTC has an amazing list of clubs to get involved with. I’ve gotten so much more out of my time here though my involvement in clubs like DECA, Student Government and PTK (honor society). The clubs encourage civic consciousness and have given me practical ways to implement what I’ve learned in class. I am passionate about bringing DECA to Waupaca High School after my graduation.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
I hope to bring my ‘dream job’ to life and provide an enjoyable workplace for others in the process. I’m hoping to employ eight workers at the rink in the first year and grow to 16 by the third year. This will enable the rink to provide for a need in the community and surrounding areas. I also plan to implement an education incentive for employees by the third year of operation as well.
