IT-Software Development

Feb 13, 2014

Career Program: IT- Software Development

Hometown: Capetown, South Africa

Current Residence: Appleton
Attended FVTC: Fall 2013 through present

Why did you choose the IT-Software Development program?
Since I first interacted with technology, I knew I wanted to follow a career in it. I realized at an early age that in today’s world, there is nothing that hasn’t interacted with some form of IT, whether it’s a cellphone application, the timing of traffic lights, or even the equipment used to make the clothes we wear. I wanted to be part of this world; I wanted to help make life easier and safer for people with the help of technology.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
It’s interesting that no matter how much technology evolves, there are always new things for me to learn. It’s rewarding knowing that what I’m learning will help me create programs that will benefit me and my community back home in South Africa. I want to unite the world in a positive way with technology, and develop programs that will bring people together.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
Technically speaking, I did not choose FVTC. I chose to apply for the Community College Initiative (CCI) program, and was placed at Fox Valley Technical College. I applied for the CCI program for one reason: it is an amazing opportunity. Where I come from, chances like this don’t come along, for anyone. The CCI program is a great initiative that brings hope to people like me: it brings great job opportunities as well. I come from a place where the highlight of your day is being able to live to see the next day, where the things that children look forward to are the streets. The college I attended in South Africa receives an application for students for this initiative every year. When I first heard of the CCI in my second year of college, I told myself that I would give anything to be chosen for the CCI. The day I was told I was a CCI candidate, I cried because I knew that this would not only help me achieve my dream, but also help me show the children of my community that there is hope for the future, all you need to do is try. I want to show everyone in South Africa that there is no reason at all that they can’t have the same opportunity as me, all they have to do is fight for their dream.

How did Fox Valley Technical College change your life?
FVTC changed my life by giving me the opportunity to have a future, by giving me a chance to reach my dream. With the help of all my instructors and program coordinators, I have learned so much educationally, culturally, and socially related. I have learned valuable knowledge, and core skills necessary to become a software developer. FVTC gave me a new perspective on many things, but more importantly through the help of the college I have made many new contacts that will help me in the pursuit of my career.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
When I graduate and return back home, I want to get an entry-level job in the software development sector. I want to start off making simple programs for computers, and then I want to make web applications, mobile phone apps, and many other applications for different aspects of daily life. My ultimate dream job is to be a Senior Software Developer.

The Community College Initiative (CCI) program is a program sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the United States Department of State, supported by the people of the United States, and implemented by IREX (International Research & Exchanges Board).
