As a medical administrative professional, you are trained to understand, function in, and supervise the business-related tasks of a medical office. These areas include medical coding, medical editing, insurance and finance, medical transcription, records management, HIPAA, and administrative management. You will find career opportunities in hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, and rehabilitation/nursing care facilities.
Program Description
This associate degree program will prepare you to function as a medical administrative professional, which is a hybrid career that will provide you with the skill sets of the Medical Coding, Medical Transcription, and Medical Office Assistant program areas. You will gain knowledge and experience in the application of HIPAA practices, medical billing and insurance claims, medical coding, medical transcription, electronic medical records, records management, medical language, medical and general office technologies, anatomy and physiology, and medical document editing.

Program Outcomes
The Medical Administrative Professional program graduate will be able to:
- Transcribe and edit medical documents and reports accurately.
- Apply an understanding of the medicolegal aspects of medical administrative practices, with a primary focus on HIPAA, medical records as legal evidence, informed consent, malpractice, and hospital, physician and employee liability.
- Assign diagnostic and procedural codes accurately using ICD-9 CM, CPT and HCPCS coding systems.
- Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease process and treatment, pharmacology, and medical terminology to interpret health records.
- Read and interpret acute, ambulatory and long-term care health records.
- Apply knowledge of frequently used payment/reimbursement systems to ensure optimal reimbursement and be aware of compliance issues.
- Utilize medical reference resources efficiently.
- Adhere to professional ethical and legal standards of conduct and legal regulations.
- Function effectively and productively within a team focused work group.
- Apply the following professional traits while working in a medical office environment: dependability, punctuality, responsibility, acceptable appearance, sound judgment, ethical behavior, flexibility and adaptability.
- Utilize effective written and oral communication skills integral to maintaining rapport with coworkers and customers.
- Apply organizational skills in managing the operations of a medical office in a diverse, stressful, and ever-changing environment.
- Apply technology skills to medical office tasks using a variety of business-related software and hardware.
