Career Opportunities

The Medical Assistant program prepares you to assist physicians and nurse practitioners in their offices or other medical settings. As a medical assistant, you perform a wide range of duties. You are responsible for medical and surgical asepsis, taking vital signs, assisting the physician with examinations and surgery, administering ECGs and administering medications. Your business/administrative duties include patient reception, appointment making, recordkeeping, filing, bookkeeping, insurance handling, typing medical correspondence and transcription and microcomputer applications. Laboratory functions include specimen collection, performance of basic laboratory tests, and microscopic work. Upon graduation, you may find a job as a medical assistant, secretary, medical laboratory assistant, phlebotomist, receptionist, medical insurance clerk or eletrocardiogram technician.


Program Description

Upon completion of this two-semester, 33-credit program, you receive a technical diploma. Full-time students enter the program in January. A three-semester study plan is available for you if you enter in the fall.

  • Student experience in MA Practicum, 31-509-310, is an unpaid experience.

Program/Plan Admission Requirements
  • Admissions assessment
  • ACCUPLACER Arithmetic score of 66 or greater or completion of equivalent GOAL course
  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Official High school transcript or equivalent

Caregiver Background Check

Must meet guidelines established by Wisconsin statutes regarding caregiver background check information prior to participating in any clinical placement.


CPR/Health Requirements

Current Healthcare Provider CPR is required prior to clinical placement. A satisfactory medical examination must also be documented and on file with the College Health Office prior to clinical placement.


Program Outcomes

Medical Assistant graduates will be able to:

  • Perform administrative responsibilities within the role of the medical assistant.
  • Utilize time management principles in prioritizing and organizing patient care.
  • Perform diagnostic testing within the role of the medical assistant.
  • Adhere to professional ethical and legal standards of conduct, legal regulations and continue professional development.
  • Function effectively and productively within a team-focused work group.
  • Demonstrate the following professional traits while working in a medical office environment: dependability, patient advocacy, punctuality, responsibility, acceptable appearance, sound judgment, ethical behavior, flexibility and adaptability.
  • Demonstrate technical skill competence to assist with exams, treatment and procedures, including patient teaching and adhering to medical asepsis techniques.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills integral to maintaining rapport with co-workers and customers.
