Partnerships for the Prevention of Homelessness

This training program will offer various topics to help communities implement successful strategies to address the challenges of working with families that cannot afford, do not desire, or are otherwise unable to maintain regular, safe, and adequate housing. These circumstances can have devastating effects on the learning process for students.

What You Will Learn:

Keynote speakers from the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth along with the Institute for Children and Poverty will provide an overview of the rights of students and obligations of schools; sessions will summarize some of Wisconsin's significant public and private initiatives at the state and local levels to assist. You will gain knowledge to:
  • Utilize existing community partnerships, volunteers, and resources to meet basic survival needs for the long-term homeless
  • Navigate the complex rights of homeless students and obligations of schools
  • Develop viable methods for handling crime (real or perceived) associated with homeless issues
  • Meet the demands of housing legislation and public policies in varying interpretation of laws such as
    • The Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act
    • McKinney-Vento Act
  • Develop a comprehensive community approach to foster continuity of services

Who Should Attend

Local government officials, business owners and associations, school administrators, law enforcement officials, health and social service providers and family/children's advocates will benefit from working together to identify solutions that support collaboration and positive problem-solving strategies. Attend this training to learn about the challenges and opportunities for families to access educational and other support services.
