This two-day scenario-based program is designed to provide investigators a general understanding of the practical application of search and seizure law, as well as experience writing search warrants based on actual and fictional criminal investigations. Designed for officers and investigators with little or no experience writing search warrants or affidavits, participants will be engaged and challenged to critically evaluate criminal investigations in order to properly apply search and seizure law and articulate elements sufficient to establish probable cause. Each student will write four or more search warrants by the conclusion of the course. Students will learn the basic principles of informant management, and the factors and variables involved in establishing informant reliability and credibility.

Course Objectives

Participants will learn practical application of search and seizure law, how to write search warrants based on actual and fictional criminal investigations, basic principles of informant management and the factors and variables involved in establishing informant reliability and credibility.

Who Should Attend

This training program is restricted to sworn law enforcement personnel only.

Registration & Logistics

The fee to attend is $145 per participant and includes instructional costs and program materials. This course is scheduled for 8:00 am to 5:00 pm each day, including a one-hour lunch break (on your own). Participants will receive 16 continuing training hours through FVTC upon successful completion.

Search Warrants in a Digital Age

Investigators are increasingly faced with the challenge of recovering evidence from electronic sources. This training focuses on the preparation and execution of search warrants specific to digital evidence. Investigators will learn the types of media that may contain digital evidence, best practices for seizing digital evidence, and tools necessary to investigate Internet-based crimes.

Course Objectives

Participants will gain an understanding of the types of data that can be recovered from computers, cell phones, GPS devices, and memory cards, and be provided with the tools needed to conduct interrogations of persons involved in high tech crimes.

Who Should Attend

This training program is restricted to sworn law enforcement personnel only. Completion of the 2-day Search Warrants, Affidavits & Probable Cause training is recommended, but not required. It will be helpful for participants to have general experience drafting search warrants prior to taking this 1-day course which focuses on digital evidence.
