What is the outlook for careers in power plant or process plant operations?
Based on feedback from energy companies, many power plant and process plant operators will retire over the next several years creating a very high-demand for these positions. January 2007 reports indicate there would be hundreds of power engineering openings each year for many years to come.
According to the Public Service Commission’s Strategic Energy Report 2012, approximately 700 highly skilled workers will retire from Wisconsin utilities by 2010, and more than 1,300 will have retired by 2015.
What is the potential for long-term advancement?
The opportunities are unlimited. Many skilled craft employees have moved up the ranks into senior management and have even become CEOs. However, this may not be for everyone. Many like careers as “first responders” and enjoy spending time helping coworkers and the public.
What are the salary expectations?
According to data available at “Get Into Energy,” 25th percentile wages are $58,150 and median wages are just over $60,000 yearly.
What does it take to work as a power plant or process plant operator?
Individuals who enjoy craft type jobs typically like working with their hands and are curious how things work and like to solve problems. In addition, they enjoy the outdoors and do not want to be confined in an office environment.
