Language barriers can create unique challenges in healthcare settings. Affinity Health System team members recently participated in a new training program, Spanish for Healthcare, offered by Fox Valley Technical College’s Global Education and Services division.
For Affinity ICU Nurse Brenda Martin, the training focused on strategies that help her personalize the care she provides to Spanish-speaking patients. "The training gives caregivers tools to help put a patient's mind at ease from the outset of any interaction with a medical professional," noted Martin. "Once communication and comfort are established in a care setting, it really opens the door for increased patient satisfaction."
Ideal for both industry professionals and traditional program students pursuing a career in healthcare, the Spanish for Healthcare certificate is designed to enhance communication and provide a broad cultural overview of the Hispanic culture. Students can also witness first-hand the cultural dynamics of healthcare facilities in Mexico or Costa Rica, as well as the challenges these entities face through an immersion experience. The courses may also transfer as electives to FVTC degree programs.
