Medical Assistant Program Information 

The Fox Valley Technical College Medical Assistant program is a 33 credit program which prepares for a career as a Medical Assistant.  As a medical assistant, you perform a wide range of duties in the physician's practice. You are responsible for medical and surgical asepsis, taking vital signs, assisting the physician with examinations and minor surgery, administering ECGs and administering medications.

Your business/administrative duties include patient reception, appointment making, recordkeeping, filing, bookkeeping, insurance handling, medical correspondence and microcomputer applications.  Laboratory functions include specimen collection, performance of basic laboratory tests, and microscopic work.

At the end of your classroom and laboratory courses, you will participate in the Medical Assistant Practicum experience.  This experience is 216 hours where you integrate and apply knowledge and skills for all previous courses in a patient care setting.  Learners perform medical assistant administrative, clinical, and laboratory duties under the supervision of trained mentors and Practicum Coordinator.  This is a supervised, unpaid, clinical experience.

Program Accreditation

The Medical Assistant program at FVTC is an accredited program by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the largest programmatic accreditor in the health sciences field. CAAHEP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
