Can I donate blood? 

Who Can Donate Blood?

  1. Donors must be 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in general good health.  General good health consists of being free from infections, the flu, fever, or sore throat.  Colds and runny noses (clear discharge) are acceptable.

  2. Donors must know the names of any medications that they are taking and why they are taking them.

  3. Donors must not have donated whole blood within the past eight weeks.

  4. If any individual has had a body piercing or tattoo in Wisconsin or Iowa at a licensed facility, they are eligible to donate blood.

  5. Individuals who have received a blood transfusion must wait 12 months before donating blood.

  6. Individuals who have had an MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) shot must wait four weeks before donating blood.

  7. Persons with a heart condition must be evaluated by blood center staff prior to scheduling a donation appointment.

  8. People who have had cancer must be evaluated by blood center staff prior to scheduling a donation appointment.

  9. Any person who has participated in any high-risk activity for HIV/AIDS may not donate blood.

  10. Persons who have had hepatitis after age 10 may not donate blood.

  11. Persons with diabetes who require insulin injections may donate blood if the diabetes is controlled and they have not experience an insulin reaction three days prior to donating.

  12. Women who are confirmed pregnant or suspect pregnancy may not donate blood.  After pregnancy there is a six-week waiting period.

  13. Donors with allergies need to wait until the symptoms are minimal or under control.

  14. Travelers returning from a country where malaria infection is possible must wait one year before donating blood.  If a person has had malaria, there is a three-year deferral period from the last outbreak.

  15. On the day of donation, all donors must bring some form of photo ID.  Donors should eat well and drink non-caffeinated fluids before their donation appointment.
