Fab Lab Offerings and Classes

How to Make Almost Anything

Based on the highly successful MIT course, this course is an introduction to “personal digital fabrication”. It is designed for “garage inventors”, entrepreneurs, artists, or individuals with new business ideas needing to create anything. Students will use laser cutters, 3-D printers, vinyl cutters, ShopBot CNC routers, and desktop milling machines to fabricate and test their design projects. The Fab Lab tools are easy to use by anyone with basic computer skills, imagination, and a desire to make stuff.

The Fab Lab is designed to allow students to explore their interests in a variety of fields including graphic design, art, business, computer-assisted design (CAD), physical and natural science, mathematics, and engineering. Over the course of this class, you will learn to use commercially available technologies such as:
• Milling
• Electronics
• Engraving
• Other rapid prototyping technologies to conceptualize, design and fabricate your ideas

Electric Guitar Building

A course that links science, math, design, and manufacturing principles together using 21st century skills and technology culminating in a final project. Development of skills in team based design, basic math and physical science concepts, wood working, and basic electronics will be introduced. The final project that each student creates is a custom solid body electric guitar.

Beginner Laser Art Workshop

In this three hour workshop, you will learn how to make a unique laser-cut art piece cut and embossed on laser-safe materials.
You will learn how to how to take your designs and cut or emboss them on laser-safe materials such as wood, wool felt, leather and acrylic.

Laser Cutting Workshop

In this three hour workshop, you will learn how to how to take your designs and cut or emboss them on laser-safe materials such as wood, wool felt, leather and acrylic.
This is an etching workshop where you will learn to design in Corel and safely cut and etch on the laser. You will leave with a customized laser-cut pendant.

Vector Art & Product Design Workshop

In this three hour workshop, you will learn to design shapes in 2D in order to translate their designs into 3-dimensional objects. Through this process, students will learn to use vector editing software such as Adobe Illustrator to create products that will then be cut using a plotter.

Students will learn about design, prototyping, geometry, CNC machines, and product creation while making their own funny characters.

Vinyl Lettering and Graphics Workshop

This is an introduction to Fab Lab’s Roland CAMM-1 Servo Desktop Vinyl Cutter. Create a vector lettering or custom graphic and have fun expressing your decorative ideas with vinyl in this three hour, hands-on workshop for every level of artistic ability.

You will learn how to: create vector shapes in 2D software, prepare files for the vinyl cutter, and apply your graphics. Explore the range of possibilities in vinyl artwork!

ShopBot Basics Workshop

The ShopBot CNC Router allows you to cut and engrave wood and other materials using a computer controlled router. The design to be cut or engraved is created in computer graphics and downloaded to the ShopBot.

You will learn the basic use of the ShopBot, how to setup your materials in the ShopBot, what materials can be cut, and generate an actual project!

Advanced Personal Fabrication

This special personal fabrication workshop for experienced Fab Lab users allows students to design, develop and fabricate advanced projects leveraging all the Fab Lab equipment and resources. Participants will design, develop and fabricated advanced personal projects.
