Industry relies on skilled professionals to remain competitive and productive.

Welcome to Technology Talk, a monthly column provided by experienced instructors at Fox Valley Technical College who work with the latest technology used in various professions. Look for different technology-related topics each month and learn how the latest innovations are strengthening today’s workplace.

A Wireless World

Increased use of wireless technology is apparent everywhere today; from retail products to industrial automation, wireless is here to stay. Those who possess the technical skills to work with wireless technology will position themselves at the forefront of industry upgrades and career opportunities.

Businesses today are going wireless to remain profitable in a world economy. Substantial cost reductions begin during installation, and wireless applications improve efficiency by dictating the operating capacity of networks and data flow. Subsequently, businesses are experiencing less downtime, whether it relates to data management or production.

In industrial settings, wireless systems represent the wave of the future as employers look for better plant floor operations involving control parameters and data acquisition. For example, manufacturers exemplify an industry increasingly reliant on the transmission of data between sensors and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), personal computers, and variable speed drives. With global competition pushing lean integrations, manufacturers aligned with wireless design can remain strong players in the market.

So who will operate today’s wireless systems and the new wave of future technology? Skilled workers with applied engineering savvy will greet this inevitable technology as technicians in needed areas like installation, setup, design, and maintenance.

Submitted by Terry Fleischman, Ph.D., Fox Valley Technical College, Department Chair, Automated Manufacturing Systems Technology, Computer Control Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electromechanical Technology, Electronics, Power Plant Technology, and Process Plant Technology

For more information, e-mail Terry at fleischm@fvtc.edu.

Interpretation Training for Workplace

New Training through FVTC Addresses Foreign Language Barriers

Fox Valley Technical College’s Foreign Language Institute is offering specialized training to fuel the growing field of foreign language interpretation in the workplace.
