Session Two

Court Hearings, Testimony and Reports (Sessions 1 & 2)

These classes prepare a student in the documentation of cases followed by preparing and writing a variety of reports including those to be used in court.  Students will be able to demonstrate testifying in court and presenting evidence and information in a court room setting.  This class also covers court ordered topics such as restitution, fines and payment plans.  Pre-sentence reports are also explained and demonstrated.  During this session students will practice writing and presenting these reports in a court setting.


Intervention (Session 2)

Students will learn the concepts of intervention as a part of the probation officer's duties.  Including the types of intervention that have worked with an emphasis on evidence based intervention models.  Applying these concepts to client issues discovered during the course of monitoring a probationer's everyday life.


Case Work Relationships (Session 2)

Students will apply the concepts of staffing cases with other probation officers to use consensus as a way to design a probation management plan.  They will also learn to prepare a case plan and establish workable goals for the probationer, including the interpretation of court orders to assure the probation plan fits the instructions of the court.  They will learn to conduct a new probationer orientation and the appropriate techniques and procedures when meeting with a probationer.  The concept of conducting a risk assessment will be taught and applied along with how to make referrals for treatment or other programs as ordered by the court.  Topics of discussion also include how to conduct/behave and safety issues around interviewing probationers, including jail settings.


Monitoring Probation Performance (Session 2)

Students learn how to make home and work place visits with probationers in a safe and appropriate manner. They also learn how and why drug and alcohol testing are necessary as part of the case management plan. Students are taught how to leverage community resources to help with probationers’ job searches and community service projects. A special session on how to monitor sex offenders is also provided.
