Officer Safety, Health, and Survival (Sessions 1 & 3)
With
a foundation based on the health and stress management of a probation
officer, safety will be strongly emphasized in this session of the
program. Students are taught self protection skills including
handcuffing and restraining procedures. Arrest and control techniques
as well as personal protection tactics such as blocking and evasive
maneuvers will be demonstrated and practiced. Methods of safe
transportation of a probationer is demonstrated and taught as well as
how to conduct body, vehicle, and home searches. Less than lethal
weapons such as tasers, OC spray and ASP may be taught if facilities
and conditions allow. Firearms will only be taught during special
sessions and only at the written direction of the student's
administrative supervisor. Several sessions will include dangers
inherent in the probation officer's job such as discovery of drug labs,
blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases.
Session 3
culminates in a series of practical exercises with confrontational
simulations and search and seizure issues which will be scored as part
of the final test.
