Session Three

Officer Safety, Health, and Survival (Sessions 1 & 3)

With a foundation based on the health and stress management of a probation officer, safety will be strongly emphasized in this session of the program.  Students are taught self protection skills including handcuffing and restraining procedures.  Arrest and control techniques as well as personal protection tactics such as blocking and evasive maneuvers will be demonstrated and practiced.  Methods of safe transportation of a probationer is demonstrated and taught as well as how to conduct body, vehicle, and home searches.  Less than lethal weapons such as tasers, OC spray and ASP may be taught if facilities and conditions allow.  Firearms will only be taught during special sessions and only at the written direction of the student's administrative supervisor.  Several sessions will include dangers inherent in the probation officer's job such as discovery of drug labs, blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases.

Session 3 culminates in a series of practical exercises with confrontational simulations and search and seizure issues which will be scored as part of the final test.
