2017 Outstanding Alumni Award Recipient

Tim Franz, Fire Chief for the City of Oshkosh, has been named the recipient of the Fox Valley Technical College 2017 Outstanding Alumni Award.

Franz, a 1983 graduate of the Fire Protection program and 1985 graduate of the Paramedic program, earned the award for demonstrating the value of technical education through career advancement, community service, continued personal and educational growth, and support of the Wisconsin Technical College System.  After graduating from FVTC Franz went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Safety and Engineering from University of Cincinnati. He credits his FVTC associate degree in helping him matriculate advanced standing toward his four-year education.  He also completed the four-year Executive Fire Officer Program sponsored by the National Fire Academy, earning the highest level of fire training certification available in the United States.

Franz steadily advanced his responsibilities with the Oshkosh Fire Department and has served as Chief since 2000.  He has directly impacted fire services in the state and nation through his involvement with FVTC and the Wisconsin Technical College System.  Franz played an instrumental role in raising awareness about the value and necessity of the FVTC Public Safety Training Center, the centerpiece project of the college’s successful 2012 public referendum.  He serves both as an FVTC adjunct instructor and as an advisory committee member in the FVTC Fire Protection program.  He also serves on the Advisory Board for the Fire and Emergency Rescue Management Degree program at UW-Oshkosh.  Franz helped develop the program, which allows FVTC graduates to earn a Bachelor’s degree.

In addition to his duties as Fire Chief, Franz serves on the Winnebago County Fire Chief’s Association and is a member of the ex-President’s group for the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin State Fire Chief’s Association.  He also served in various board positions at Trinity Lutheran Church for over 20 years, including serving as Director of the Church from 2010 through 2014.
