Why did you choose the Nursing program?

In high school I attended the Waukesha Academy of Health Professions, a charter school for students interested in the medical field. One day a flight for life helicopter landed on our football field, and I was exposed to an exciting area of nursing. From then on I knew I wanted to pursue a career in nursing.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?

Now that I am in my third semester of the nursing program, I am able to start putting the pieces together and understand the relationship of the pathophysiology to the patient’s presenting symptoms. I am gaining confidence in my ability to provide comprehensive patient care and feel that I am really making a difference in the lives of my patients. I have been working as a nursing assistant for over five years on a floor with telemetry (heart monitoring), and this semester we have focused on cardiology. I am now able to interpret the ECG strips and abnormal heart rhythms, which has been an extremely rewarding area of personal growth.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?

I moved to the Appleton area three years ago while I was completing my prerequisites for nursing. I was able to tour the campus and I was impressed with the human patient simulator lab and other nursing facilities. I was also drawn to the program because of the high success rate on the NCLEX, which is higher than many conventional four-year schools.

How did Fox Valley Technical College help you change your life?

Going to the Tech has enabled me to find balance between work, school and living my life. I have gained a different perspective on the importance of organization and responsibility and am more focused on my future. I have formed a bond with many of my peers that is special because we are all supporting each other as we inch closer to graduation in May.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?

My end goal is to be a flight nurse, but I hope to gain experience working in an emergency department first. This semester has piqued my interest in cardiology, so I’d be open to exploring this option as well. I plan to continue my education after graduating FVTC in the fall.
