Professional Communications

Oct 28, 2013

Hometown: Racine
Current Residence: Weston, WI
Attended FVTC: June 2012 through December 2013

Why did you choose the Professional Communications program?
I have a degree from years ago and have worked in marketing my entire career. When the company I worked for closed my division, I decided to go back to school to update my skills. I did a lot of research to find a program that focused on applying new technologies to the field of communications, and something that I could complete in a relatively short time period. It’s important to keep learning about new methods and technologies in your field to stay relevant. This program has been a great fit.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
Through the program, you are exposed to a variety of career avenues in communications. While I choose the program primarily to update my web and social media skills for marketing, I have learned skills that apply to a number of other areas in communications including instructional design, training, and grant writing. I like the fact that there are a number of directions you can go with this degree.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
Fox Valley offered the program that I thought would be the best fit for my goals. I wanted to gain practical knowledge and experience, so an associate degree was the right choice. The Professional Communications program is entirely online so I have the flexibility to study long distance.

The whole experience of going back to school after so many years has been great. The instructors have been encouraging and positive. I find that there is a definite mix of students in the program, from those just starting out, to others like me, who have been out in the workforce for years. It helps to gain a lot of different perspectives.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
Although I am keeping my options wide open, I see myself fitting well in a position in marketing and communications where I can wear many hats, such as a small firm or non-profit organization.
