Why did you choose the Criminal Justice program?

I served in the United States Marines Corps right out of high school and the experiences from that, along with the camaraderie and the feeling of helping those who truly need you, was truly rewarding. It is hard to forget that feeling, and I felt being a police officer would allow me to continue to help those in my community while having that camaraderie and discipline.

After I got out of the military, I experienced some trouble readjusting to civilian life and started to steer down a bad path. At the time, I had no interest in a career where I had to wear a uniform and be in a ranking position again, but it was actually some great officers I've spoken with that helped shape me into a better person. I, too, would like to one day be able to help someone in a similar situation become a better person. I also have a beautiful 2-year-old daughter that I want to take care of, be someone she can look up to and be proud of.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?

I really enjoy all of my classes. The knowledge and first-hand experiences that my instructors have shared makes coming to school enjoyable. I've learned a lot about what it takes to be a police officer, and that it is a lot more than just "catching the bad guys." This profession really is more about helping shape your community and helping those in it by doing whatever you can to create a positive experience and be a great role model to those around you. I also find it very interesting to learn about all the laws and state statutes in my Criminal Procedures class.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?

I chose Fox Valley Technical College because, after doing some research and speaking to some local police officers, I learned that FVTC had one of the best Criminal Justice programs in the nation. I found out that big city departments, such as LAPD and NYPD, like to recruit and hire students who've graduated from Fox Valley Tech, which truly shows the great reputation and credibility this school has. The fact that I can get a degree for less than half the cost of what it would be at other schools, with the possibility of being hired anywhere in the nation, made it all that much better.

How did Fox Valley Technical College help you change your life?

Fox Valley Tech has helped me in many different ways. Being in a program where I'm taught by instructors who can share their own on-the-job experience and knowledge has let me see what this career field is truly about. I’ve also become more involved in the community by participating in volunteer opportunities provided by the school. I work as a Fox Valley Tech Security Officer and a College Ambassador, and am the Vice President of the Student Veterans of America, and it has all helped me give back to the school. Being able to help those in the school I go to and the school itself is something I enjoy and helps me to do better outside of the school environment also.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?

I hope to apply to local police departments in the area, but I'm also interested in applying to LAPD or Houston. The main goal is to eventually work in a federal position.
