Black History Month is a time to pay tribute to leaders and role models in the Black community who have motivated and inspired many throughout history.
We asked faculty, staff and students at Fox Valley Technical College to share their favorite quotes from Black leaders and explain why their words are so important to them.
Favorite quote from Mental Health Therapist Dr. Kadihjia Kelly:
"Knowledge is power. It's not, are you going to college? It's what college are you going to?"
— Catherine Kelly (Mama)
Here's what Kadihjia has to say about the meaning behind this quote:
I would not be where I am today if it had not been for the “push” from my grandmother, my mama! Catherine Kelly, my queen, my best friend, my heart, the core of my existence.
The manner in which she fought oppression, racism, and sexism is something that has given me the strength to follow in her footsteps. If it were not for her, I would never have pursued the journey of continuing my education and completing my PhD. She had always instilled in me that education is power. When I graduated from high school, it was not “are you going to college?” It was “what college are you going to?”
There was no question about my future when it came to my education, and for that, I am grateful and truly thankful that she raised me. She embodied confidence and intellectualism that I had the privilege of witnessing and embracing.
Mama, I miss you with all my heart and love you so much. Wish you could see these words!
