Celebrating Black History Month

Celebrating Black History Month

| By: Britten, Casey

February is dedicated as Black History Month, an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in the history of the United States. We proudly support and celebrate the African American community at Fox Valley Technical College this month and all year long.

Kyra Madison is the direct descendant of Coreen (an enslaved cook) and James Madison (fourth president of the United States). Kyra speaks about the shared experience of the disinheritance of Black America (both individually and as a community) from the founding opportunities of land, wealth and privilege afforded White America. This disparity created by over 400 of years of sanctioned enslavement and the 100+ years of Jim Crow laws that followed necessitates the discussion of equitable inclusion initiates and institutional reparations.

Free to current FVTC students. Lunch, snacks and refreshments provided.
