Why did you choose the Natural Resources Technician program?
Growing up I really enjoyed being outdoors and learning about the environment. I didn't know having a career in the outdoors was possible until I saw the Natural Resources program at FVTC. With two little kids at home I know that environmental education on all levels is so important and something that is very important to me. In every field of Natural Resources there is an aspect of educating others and that is what really drew me in. I want to help teach others why we should care about the ecosystem.
What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
Natural Resources is a very large umbrella of rewarding and exciting careers that cover a large variety of subjects. The most interesting part of this career field to me is that there are always opportunities to learn more and to help teach others in your community, no matter which career path you choose. Sometimes this field can feel overwhelming because there are so many things to fix in our ecosystem and you can only do so much. Being around other like-minded individuals who care as well is great motivation to keep pursuing these careers and knowing that any difference you can make is worth it.
Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
I initially chose FVTC because of the atmosphere around the college that made it feel like a great place to learn. I really liked the fact that all the learning in the Natural Resources program is very hands on with a lot of in field experience that you won't get at a four-year school.
How has Fox Valley Technical College helped you change your life?
While at FVTC I have been given amazing opportunities to get involved and make lasting connections with organizations and agencies in the Natural Resources field. These are opportunities that I never would have had if it wasn't for the Tech. It has put me on the path to a fulfilling career that I know I will love and enjoy. FVTC has allowed me to become a better leader and more prepared to enter the workforce.
What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
I want to enter the field of soil conservation. While working in soil conservation I will be able to help members of the community better understand their land and how taking care of their soil is one of the most important things they can do for their land and for our ecosystem.
What's your best advice for someone who's not sure they're ready for college?
Contact one of the Admission Specialists at Fox Valley Tech. They are all so nice and can answer any questions you have to help dispel many of the common college fears.
If you know of any college students in your life, talk to them as well. They can tell you what it's like on campus and give you a student perspective. I wasn't sure I was ready either but I took a leap of faith and it was the best decision I made. We have Peer Leaders as well—they are current students who know about the school and can answer many of your questions!
Pro Tips
Best on-campus place to study: There is a small nook to the right of door 10, it has a great view of a garden and it's not too busy. The chairs are super comfy and there is a nice size table there.
One class you surprisingly enjoyed: Fish Management
One class that challenged you: Economics
One thing every FVTC student must experience before graduating: Student Life has a really nice hang out spot that you can watch TV, play video games and just relax and meet other students.
Pro-tip for newcomers trying to find their way around campus: Grab a map and just walk around when you have time. The north side of campus can be the hardest to find your way around, but when you walk it enough times the layout becomes easier to understand so you don't get lost as much.
