Age: 51
Hometown: Milwaukee, WI

Current Residence: Fremont, WI
Attended FVTC: June 2012 through December 2013

Why did you choose the Professional Communications program?
I chose this program because I was looking for a career change due to limited opportunities in my then-current field of automotive retail. I enjoy taking complicated technical information and making it easier for the layperson to understand, and finding the right message and communicating it through the proper mediums. Also, this particular program is 100% online, so I’m able to manage my time and have the flexibility to complete my degree.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
The professional communications field is estimated by U.S. government statistics to grow over the next 10 years. There are so many different skills you learn, like writing, editing, graphics, instructional design, manual creation, and working in collaborative environments. This provides a wide range of opportunities and many potential career paths. Due to the demand for professional communicators with diverse skills, I can direct my career path toward my passions and still find employment.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
My two sons graduated from FVTC, with associate degrees in automotive and printing & publishing. Their feedback was very positive and both have careers in their respective fields. Their instructors cared about their success and futures. I made my choice based on their experience, as well as my knowledge of the statewide technical college system and overall cost of schooling. Also, I needed to obtain the highest level of skills in the shortest period of time, while still working. I am very thankful to have found FVTC to be the right school with the right program at the right time in my life.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
I’m currently employed as an intern at I-CAR in Appleton on the instructional design team responsible for development of educational courses for the automotive collision industry. This type of position will develop into technical writing, editing, video scripting, narrations and so forth. FVTC has given me the opportunities to be successful beyond graduation. When I graduate, I’ll not only have my education but also real-world experience through my internship. I have been given the opportunity to believe in myself to take on the challenge of a new career path and be successful in it.
