Helping Memorialize the Forgotten

Helping Memorialize the Forgotten

Sep 25, 2015

Fox Valley Technical College and its Horticulture Technician program were honored to contribute toward the restoration of the Outagamie County Cemetery.

The site, located behind FVTC’s Service Motor Company Agriculture Center on the Appleton campus and adjacent to the east side of college’s training road for truck driving, was officially dedicated during a ceremony on September 24. The Friends of Outagamie County Cemetery led the development of the restoration project, along with several other community organizations and individuals.

For many years the cemetery remained unnoticed and mainly forgotten until a recent initiative commenced to memorialize the final resting place for more than 130 residents of the former Outagamie County Asylum for the Chronic Insane. The dedication ceremony included a formal program and opportunities for attendees to explore new marked burial rows, a decorative stone wall displaying names of the deceased, a walking path, and a newly-constructed pergola as the primary additions to the cemetery. Under the leadership of FVTC Horticulture Instructor Jim Beard, students created a hardscape element for the site that includes most of the aforementioned components.
