WTCS Develops Free Basic Computer Skills Course

In response to needs in the employment and education sectors, the Wisconsin Technical College System has created a free basic computer skills course available as an open educational resource.

Due to computers touching most employment processes and nearly every educational scenario today, the need to know how to log on to a computer, navigate the Internet, and have a working email account to complete college applications and employment-related forms continues to impact an increasingly growing number of individuals.

Regional employers have noted a lack of basic computer skills in the job application process, and many college students struggle to turn in assignments based on little or no computer knowledge—aside from personal technology devices like mobile phones and touch screen tablets. Led at the state level by Fox Valley Technical College’s Learning Innovations Center and the project’s lead writer and course developer, Kris Wilson, the course teaches students how to better operate computer devices, create documents, manage files, use the Internet, explore social media, and more. Those using the course can complete one or any number of lessons depending on their needs.

The course is accessible by going to www.wisc-online.com and clicking on the Computer Skills Course link at the top of the page. For assistance or for more information, interested parties can call Kris Wilson at FVTC at 920-560-1658.

Creation of this course was made possible through the INTERFACE Project, funded by a Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant.
