Career Program: Professional Communications
Age: 39
Hometown: Menasha
Current Residence: Menasha
Attended FVTC: January 2014-May 2016

Why did you choose the Professional Communications program?
I chose the Professional Communications program because I love writing. Whether it is a novella, poem, or a technical document doesn’t matter. Once I began the program and learned of the increasing job prospects, that didn’t hurt either.

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?
Number-one: technical writing is vastly different from creative writing. Fewer words is a good thing, rather than expounding upon an idea with flowery language. If seven words can do it, then don’t use 300 words. As a creative writer, this has proven to be the hardest thing to adjust to.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?
I chose Fox Valley Technical College for two reasons: first is the affordability, second is the quality of the education. Learning from instructors who have current, real-world experience in the fields in which they are teaching is invaluable.

How did Fox Valley Technical College help you change your life?
By giving me the opportunity to excel. I did not take advantage of the opportunities in high school, and I am righting that wrong here at FVTC. Being vice president of the Student Government Association, and the editor-in-chief of the student publication, the Fox Times, has been a rewarding experience.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?
Technical writer or editor. There are also many freelance options available for someone with this degree.
