Demand for Airplane Mechanics Soaring

Demand for Airplane Mechanics Soaring

| By: Britten, Casey

In addition to a pilot shortage, the aviation industry is also experiencing a shortage of behind-the-scenes maintenance staff. Demand for aviation mechanics is at a near all-time high.

Fox Valley Technical College offers a 64-credit Airframe & Powerplant Mechanics technical diploma, which provides the training needed to enter the field. Located at the S.J. Spanbauer Center in Oshkosh, the program trains students to inspect, troubleshoot, repair and maintain aircraft structure and aircraft engines. Students also learn the details of maintenance documentation, recordkeeping and certification, as well as how to read technical drawings and diagrams.

NBC 26 recently highlighted this career and spoke with FVTC Aviation Maintenance Instructor Joe Schmidt. "We bring people in as entry-level, interested candidates for the program, and take them to entry-level technicians," Joe explains, adding that current demand for entry level technicians is extremely high, with excellent salary potential.
