Automotive repair work will be your specialty in this career field, where you’ll find employment in a professional service garage or dealership. Your hands-on training will give you a good working knowledge of all the systems used in late model cars. You’ll learn how to accurately diagnose issues and identify the necessary repairs. In addition to engine testing and rebuilding, your training will cover fuel injection systems, on-board diagnostics, climate control systems, electrical systems, brakes, transmissions, steering and suspension systems and more.

Is a four-year degree in your future? Save time and money by starting here. You can earn your associate degree at Fox Valley Tech, then apply your credits toward a bachelor’s degree. Or easily transfer your credits to other two-year colleges.

Program Outcomes
  • Demonstrate professionalism appropriate for the auto service industry.
  • Demonstrate basic positive communication skills needed for dealing with customers and others in a professional manner.
  • Develop safe procedures and practices for all phases of service and repair of automobiles, machinery and test equipment and for handling chemicals and solvents used in repair and cleaning. You will participate in, and receive S/P2 safety and pollution prevention certification, or equivalent.
  • Develop a working knowledge of repair manuals and computer programs used by automotive technicians in the servicing of vehicles.
  • Demonstrate technical abilities and competencies equivalent to the standards used by modern repair facilities.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive internal combustion engines.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive automatic transmission/transaxle systems.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive manual drive train and axles systems.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive steering and suspension steering systems.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive brake systems.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive electrical/electronic systems.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of automotive engine performance systems.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of light-duty diesel engine systems.
  • Perform diagnosis, service, and repair of hybrid electric / alternative fuel automotive systems.
