Culinary Arts students representing Fox Valley Technical College’s first-ever “Grilling, Smoking, and BBQ” class competed as two teams in a national barbecue competition in Montello, Wisconsin, sponsored by the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS). The class is part of a new certificate offering in Advanced Culinary Arts.

Forty-one teams from around the nation competed in four different categories. Awards were given to top 10 finishers in the chicken, ribs, pork shoulder, and beef brisket categories. The FVTC students' first-ever attempt at showcasing their skills in this event produced 6th and 12th place team finishes, respectively.

Individually, five FVTC students earned top 10 finishes, including Bob Nelson, 5th place in the beef brisket category, Emily Hoskins, 6th place in the chicken competition, Miranda Peyketewa, 6th place in the ribs category, Scott Strand, 8th place in the pork shoulder contest, and Charlie Stephens, 9th place in the beef brisket competition.  Other participating FVTC students in the competitions included Allie Schuls, Katie Oskey, and Eric Williamson.

KCBS is the world's largest organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts with over 14,000 members worldwide. The non-profit organization sanctions over 300 barbeque contests coast-to-coast throughout the United States. From volunteering to actual event production, its members also offer assistance to civic and charitable organizations who organize events.

Congratulations, Culinary students!
