Tom Witczak, Appleton, an instructor in Fox Valley Technical College’s Criminal Justice - Law Enforcement program, has earned the national Z-Man Award from ALERT International, an organization that provides assistance to states in establishing effective and defensible standards for training law enforcement officers in the field of emergency vehicle operations.

Witczak received the award at the annual ALERT International conference in Knoxville, Tennessee. He earned the distinction for his lifelong devotion to training emergency and pursuit driving, in addition to his authorship of many phases of the Wisconsin Student and Instructor Training Guides for the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course, or EVOC. Witczak wrote the original EVOC manual for the State of Wisconsin and has been a contributing source in the National EVOC Training Manual.

The Z-Man Award is named after the late Portland, Oregon police officer Mark Zylawy, who died after being struck by a tractor-trailer rig on his way to work in 2008. In memory of Officer Zylawy and his significant contributions to EVOC training, ALERT International established the Z-man Award and scholarship fund. The award is presented annually for the best innovative idea in police driver training.
