Our Community Makes It Happen

Even Start Family Literacy: Special Recognition for Donors & Partners

Funding for the Even Start Family Literacy program has an interesting history. Ninety percent of the funding during the first four years was provided by a competitive grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Each year following, the grant paid for a lesser amount until year eight, when it covered only 33% of the costs of the program. Eventually, DPI funding was eliminated.

As the need for services increased and state funding decreased and disappeared, Fox Valley Technical College and the Appleton Area School District increased their level of support. The partnership also requested and gratefully received generous contributions from organizations and foundations from throughout our community. We are extremely grateful to the following donors:
  • J. J. Keller Foundation, Inc.
  • John J. and Ethel D. Keller Fund*
  • Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation
  • Mielke Family Foundation
  • United Way Fox Cities
  • Rotary Club of Appleton, Inc.
  • Schmidt Family G4 Fund*
  • Infant Welfare Circle/King’s Daughters Fund*
  • Caring Fund*
*Funds held within the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Inc.

In addition to the much-appreciated financial support provided by donors, numerous partners joined Fox Valley Technical College and the Appleton Area School District in the collaborative effort to strengthen the program. They include:
  • Appleton Park and Recreation
  • Appleton Public Library
  • Catholic Charities
  • Childcare Resource and Referral
  • Family Resource Center
  • Fox Valley Literacy Coalition
  • Head Start
  • Outagamie County Parent Resource Center
  • Parent Connection of Northeast Wisconsin
  • UW Extension
Ongoing delivery of the Even Start Family Literacy program is evidence that “it takes a village.” We thank our donors and partners for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of families and enhancing the quality of life in our community.
