Yashira Robles' Story

Yashira Robles enrolled in the Appleton Even Start Family Literacy program in April 2010 to obtain her High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED). On the first day of classes, she struggled to step foot in the door. She was challenged by memories of negative school experiences she endured while growing up in Puerto Rico. More than anything, she wanted to turn around and go home, but she didn’t.

Then something happened. Yashira found that many students in Family Literacy shared similar experiences and struggles, which they openly discussed with each other. A special camaraderie began to develop with parents of young children. Yashira looked forward to each day, enjoying the close bond with students and instructors, all of whom motivated her academically and supported her with the parenting situations she faced. As she advanced through the program, Yashira became a strong, self-confident woman and role model; and she obtained a manager’s position at Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Yashira completed her HSED in December 2011 (a very proud moment) and is currently enrolled in program preparation courses at Fox Valley Tech. Yashira focuses on two important goals in her life: To learn as much as she can to help her three sons do well and succeed in school; and to graduate with a degree in Business Management from Fox Valley Technical College.
