Fox Valley Technical College’s National Criminal Justice Training Center (NCJTC) held the 5th Annual School Resource Officer Training Conference this week in Appleton, welcoming more than 200 law enforcement practitioners and school personnel from nearly 50 cities throughout the nation to share best practices in addressing school violence.

Among the attendees were representatives from the Connecticut State Police, who facilitated two sessions on the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in December of 2012. That tragedy served as a discussion tool to help prevent and better respond to school shootings and related incidences of violence. Overall, more than 20 workshops were held during the three-day conference, which included other topics like the sexual exploitation of children, juvenile mental health issues, successful truancy programs, drug trends among youth, child trafficking, trends in social media for investigative purposes, and more.

FVTC’s NCJTC is committed to providing important training sessions like this to build safer communities through increased awareness, enhanced preventative strategies, and integrated response systems by involving a variety of key stakeholders of school safety. This conference exemplifies how FVTC is a national leader in several areas of public safety training as the college prepares to open its 75-acre, state-of-the-art Public Safety Training Center later this year to better meet industry demands.
