Why did you choose the Occupational Therapy Assistant program?

I chose to pursue Occupational Therapy because my ultimate goal is to use horses for therapy to aid people with special needs. When I found out that the people who run these therapy sessions are Occupational Therapists, I knew this was my calling. Since I was young, I have had a love for horses and an even greater love for helping people and making them feel like they can accomplish the impossible. For some people, riding or working with a horse seems like an unreachable accomplishment and I want to change that. Horses change lives, therapists change lives, why not put that together and make a living out of it?

What are you learning about your career field that you find interesting or rewarding?

This past semester, I have learned a lot about mental health and many different medical conditions. I know that every bit of knowledge I gain will be helpful in my future as an OTA and eventually as an OT. I am currently learning that there are so many options for places and populations you can work with as an OTA. It is amazing the amount of different avenues that are becoming available.

Why did you choose Fox Valley Technical College?

I chose Fox Valley Technical College because I wanted to learn by experience. I felt I would be a better therapist if I had more real experience. I also chose it because it is significantly less expensive and much closer to where I live than any other college. It allows me to go to school and learn while not breaking the bank, and not having to give up the life I had before college.

How did Fox Valley Technical College help you change your life?

Fox Valley Technical College has opened my life to many opportunities. Because I have more money that I did not have to spend on classes, I am able to participate in study abroad programs with the Tech that would likely not have been possible at a university. I have also learned about special scholarships and colleges I did not know existed that will take my credits, and I have met some amazing people that have opened me up to some great opportunities.

What type of job do you expect to find after graduation?

Since I am planning to transfer upon graduation, it is possible that I will not get a job as an OTA right away, but I would like to work as an OTA in either Appleton or Milwaukee.
