The Sweeter Side of Graduation

Caps and gowns own this time of year. They fill gymnasiums while families celebrate another milestone of life with cheers and hugs. Graduation and spring go together like the smell of grills and summer. This year, however, commencement ceremonies are looking a bit differently.

Regional colleges, universities, and high schools are honoring their graduates this year in virtual events due to COVID-19. FVTC’s virtual commencement ceremony is set for May 30, but instructors in Early Childhood Education (ECE) got a fresh start in honoring their associate degree graduates.

Faculty members Kathy, Judi, Barbara, and Amy baked sets of homemade cupcakes for each of their 23 spring ECE grads. They then divided the sweet goodies among the four of them and delivered personalized bakery-style boxes to 16 different cities in order to reach all of their students at home. Upon arrival, they placed the boxes on front porches or other pre-arranged locations in adherence to social distancing.
