Explore Nontraditional Occupations

Throughout the years, gender stereotypes have perpetuated the myth of “men’s work” and “women’s work,” limiting an individual’s career choices. Don’t let gender stereotypes limit you.

What is a Non-traditional Occupation?

A Non-traditional Occupation is defined as any occupation in which women or men comprise less than 25% of the workforce. Some examples of non-traditional occupations for women are firefighter, welder, or automotive technician; examples for men include nurse, interior designer, or administrative professional.

In the past, girls' career options were limited to teaching, nursing or administrative professionals. Boys looked at futures in construction, factory work, or mechanics. Times have changed! At Fox Valley Technical College, we want you to pursue your dreams. We believe you can be anything you want to be!

Why choose Non-traditional?

  • Freedom to pursue any career related to your interests and abilities

  • Possibility to earn higher wages

  • More opportunities for advancement, better benefits, and better financial security

  • Demand for diversified workforce

  • Fulfill your dreams
