Academic Advising FAQ

Who should see an advisor?

Students who have applied for and been accepted into a program.

You will meet your advisor at your New Student Registration session.

How do I know who my advisor is?

One month into your first term of enrollment, your advisor’s contact information can be found by logging into your My FVTC account. For most programs, students will be assigned an Academic Advisor (student services advisor) as well as a Faculty Advisor (instructional staff). Both advisors will work cooperatively to meet your advising needs.

If you are not admitted to your program, you can receive advising assistance through the Center for New Students.

When should I see an advisor?

At least once per term, particularly before registration. We recommend that you schedule an appointment in advance.

Why do I need to see an advisor?

Advisors help students make informed choices about degree requirements and create a plan for success.

How do I meet with my advisor?

Appointments are highly recommended. You are welcome to walk-in to meet with an academic advisor in students services; however, your program advisor may not always be available during walk-ins. Faculty advisors should be contacted for information on their individual ability.
